Our Workshop with Kaffe and Brandon

Hi Everyone

I thought I would share with you some of the fantastic insights into colour and design we witnessed in the shop when Kaffe Fassett and Brandon Mably wove their colour magic in the shop.

We had 15 lucky ladies who played around with Kaffe's Overlapping Tiles quilt from his book Shots and Stripes.

The Overlapping Tiles quilt is really just squares sewn together, but wow just look at the results.  Here are some random photos from the day.

Here is the quilt built to match the clothes (I do it all the time).

I think I could run one of those competitions where you add the captions!  For the two photos above, what would you say!  These two guys are just pure fun and so inspirational, their understanding of colour and design is amazing; and they share that  knowledge freely.

I would like to say thanks to Kaffe and Brandon, to XLN (the fabric wholesaler) for organizing the tour.  To all my staff who worked very hard to set up the classroom and during the workshop.

A day well spent.  I suppose I'll have to make the quilt now... yet another quilt!!!!

Michelle Yeo's - New Book - Of Needle, Thimble & Thread - Is Here

Hi Everyone

MICHELLE YEO'S NEW BOOK IS HERE

OF NEEDLE, THIMBLE and THREAD

Congratulations Michelle.  We love your book.

Michelle will be teaching in the shop 24, 25 & 26 July.

We have no details yet, but if you would like to be involved please ring the shop so we can take your expression of interest.

Here is Michelle seeing her book for the first time.

Just beautiful. This is another great publication from Quilt Mania.

I think we are the first shop to have Michelle book in Australia.  I ordered 20 copies, they arrived on Friday, and we only have 10 copies left.  So that is a testament to how great the book is.

Here are a few pages to whet your appetite.  There are 18 quilt patterns in the book.

The book is on our web-site, under "Books - Antique Quilts", you can order now and try to avoid waiting for our next delivery.

Kaffe Fassett - Book Signing in the Shop

Hi Everyone

KAFFE AND BRANDON

will be here next week.  For everybody who didn't get a place in their workshop, they will be signing books, from 4 pm on Wednesday 19 February.  Yes that's next Wednesday!!!!.

Hope to see anyone who can make it into the shop.  We have turned it into a Kaffe Cave.  The quilts will be hanging for the next few weeks.

WHAT'S NEW

We had a delivery of some of the nicest Batik fabrics I've seen.  If you are into Batiks you need to see these in person.

We also received the new bright "Modern Solids" from In The Beginning Fabrics.  Fabulous clear bright solids.  (The photo is a bit yellow, sorry)

CLASS ACTION

This is some of what happened in the classroom this week.

See something you would like to try?

Toiles de Jouy - A little touch of French Fabric History

Hi Everyone

It is raining in Sydney today (more like misting, the humidity has turned to water particles, but the ground is wet).  It has been some time since we have seen rain and the gardens are starting to show the effect of the dry. This makes rain a big event in Sydney today, but we had a great event in the shop on Sunday.

Marie-Christine Flocard's

lecture on Toiles de Jouy, was fascinating.  The printing factory was set up in the town of Jouy, so as to be close to the Palace of Versailles.    Clever marketing.  The date was around 1760.  Herr Oberkampf,  started the factory and is responsible  for the nearly 3000 de Jouy toile designs, many that have been lost over time, that we love today.  The factory produced fabric for about 100 years.

Marie-Christine described the printing processes from block printing to etched copper rollers.  The major components of the dyes and mordants.  The colours were unbelievable.  Marie-Christine shared her toile samples with us and then we had a "French" Show and Tell.  Thank you to everyone who contributed.

Here are some photos

Slightly different view of the classroom and audience.  We didn't have to lock anyone in.

Marie-Christine explaining how copper roller printing worked.

A bit of Boutis.

Check out the yellow background.

I just want them all.

Thank you Marie-Christine.

CLASS ACTION

The last class of Summer School was Liz Pinczewki's Jubilation Quilt.

Another layout.  Looks good Liz (Liz works here a few days a week).

Our normal class schedule started again.

Today we welcomed back Marg Sampson George's class.

Phyl wins the "what I did over the holidays" conversation with this beauty.

Tomorrow I will see what Karen Cunningham's Wednesday class got up to.
