More Aired Quilts

As promised here are some more quilts from our recent "Airing of the Quilts".

The most recent quilt shown.

This is one of the prettiest Yo-Yo quilts I have seen.

I think I have started making this 1930's classic, but I have no idea where it is.

English silk quilt, with the papers still inside.

A touch of Amish.  This one dates to the 1930's.

Take a good look at the striping fabric in this quilt.  It is a lot older than you first think.  First half 1800's.

For those of you who make quilts with 1930's reproduction fabrics, please have a try at a coloured background.  This bubblegum pink is a classic.

1850's

So is this one.

I suspect the Red and Green applique quilt was a "Southern" Quilt, and the chocolate "Puss in the Corner" block quilt is a "Northern" quilt.  I am referring to America of course.  But it is interesting that these two quilts are of a similar age, 1850, but at that time "quilting" fashions were quite regional.  Also think about the climatic differences.  Hot in the south, cold in the north.

These are two of my latest purchases.  The 1930's Flower Garden, I bought because the hexagons are all fussy cut; something not very common in the 30's.  The pink and white Baby Bunting quilt dates to around 1920.  I bought this for the magnificent quilting, which unfortunately doesn't show in the photo, and its graphic impact.

I'm off for a fortnight to the Norfolk Island Quilting Retreat.  So as Norfolk Island appears to be lacking in modern communications, I will have to be back here to post the photos.

The Quilts have been Aired.

Hi Everyone.

Sorry it has taken me so long to post the Airing of the Quilts from last Sunday, but I'm running away for a holiday next week, so I'm doing a million things at the moment.

I will just show you some of the quilts that were shown.  I will try and fit in more photos next week, as blogger seems to be limiting the number of photos I can have.  (Can anyone help!)

Please enjoy these wonderful old quilts.

It's that Green.

Spot that Green again.  For those who were not there, this quite bright spearmint green, which you see typically in English quilts, is a mid 1800's marvel.  It often looks out of place with the other fabrics in a quilt.  It is a good dating fabric.  I searched high and low to buy a quilt with this green in it when I was last in England.  Well now I know where I can steal some.

Amazing

I will post some more next week.

A Little Bit of 1930.

WHAT'S NEW

1930's Texas Star Starter Kit

This is our new 1930's Texas Star - Starter Kit, and it has happened because staffer Marj, who is the queen of machine piecing, made this beautiful hand pieced and quilted masterpiece.  Here it is hanging on the pink wall in the shop.  So many customers have admired it and wanted to know how to make it, we decided to make up the Starter Kit.  Full details of the Kit are in our web-site under "Kits".  Starter Packs costs $65.00 each.

So please come and visit the shop to see Marj's lovely quilt.

BOM UPDATE

Janelle sent us this photo of her finished Civil War Chronicles BOM.

Wow.

I'm making this one, I'm up to the green blocks in the corner.  Well done Janelle.  Have a peek at Janelle's Blog www.janellenoack.blogspot.com.au to see all her beautiful work.

We have one BOM program for Civil War Chronicles left, so if you would like to make this quilt ring now.

Elizabeth dropped to show how her Sarah's Revival BOM blocks are going.

Full details of Sarah's Revival is on our web-site under Block of the Month.

NEW BARBARA BRACKMAN BLOCK OF THE WEEK

Last year, Barbara Brackman, quilt historian and author AND fabric designer for Moda gave us a her Civil War Block of the Week published for free on her blog see our Blog List.  Thank you so much Barbara.  A number of staff and friends took up this challenge.  Here is another completed top, this is Kate's.  Just love the sashing fabric, makes the top sing.  You can still get all these patterns on her Civil War blog.

Barbara has just launched her new Block of the Week, Grandmother's Choice.  The blog address is
http://grandmotherschoice.blogspot.ca/  I will attempt to add this one to our blog list. In this Block of the Week Barbara is showcasing blocks from about 100 years age, the period of the Women's Rights Movements.  The Suffragettes.  Also an interesting period for quilts.

Janet, who has completly finished her Civil War, Block of the Week quilt, is now off and sewing on the new one.  Janet has chosen to make these blocks in "William Morris" fabrics, which is just perfect for this period.

We will track her progress, but these are a intriguing start.

Why don't you start one too.
